Gamow chose the Physical review letter in which to cite from an address of Pope pius x11 to the Pontifical Academy of sciences months before to make the mischevous point that the cosmological theories he defended « can be considered now as UN UNQUESTIONNAL TRUTH.» But in the creation of the univers, Gamow a more sober appeal to St-Augustine in order to explicite a more self-consciously periodized part of that cosmological history, asserting «it awas st. augustine of Hippo who first raised the question as to WHAT GOD WAS DOING BEFORE HE MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH?»
